It’s a paradox we all have to live with—no matter how much we plan, prepare, or try to predict the future, there will always be unknowns. But here’s the thing: uncertainty doesn’t mean a loss of control.


You can be unsure of your destination and still have total control of the vehicle you’re driving.


An artist may not know exactly how their masterpiece will turn out, but every brushstroke is intentional.


A scientist rarely knows what they’ll discover, but they are in complete control of the experiments that lead them there.


This is a crucial distinction because, depending on your mindset, uncertainty can either feel like a looming threat or an exciting invitation to explore. When we fear uncertainty, we cling to absolutes, to what is familiar, to what feels “safe.” But when we embrace uncertainty, we open ourselves up to innovation, discovery, and endless possibilities.


And that’s exactly why the very first line of the AI Mindset definition I wrote—ironically presented to a group for the first time last night—states:


“An AI Mindset prioritizes curiosity over certainty.”

At its core, an AI Mindset is about questioning relentlessly, refusing to settle for the first or most obvious answer. It thrives on the idea that the first conclusion is never enough. Instead, it constantly asks:


“What else is there to discover?”


This is the mindset that fuels progress, the kind that pushes boundaries and reshapes industries. It’s what leads to groundbreaking ideas, scientific breakthroughs, and transformative innovation.


But adopting this mindset requires something difficult: a willingness to let go of the need for immediate answers. It asks us to be comfortable sitting in the unknown, exploring it, testing possibilities, and asking better questions.


Relearning What We Already Knew as Children


Ironically, we were all born with this mindset.


Think about a toddler. They don’t see uncertainty as a threat—it’s their playground. The entire world is a puzzle they are determined to solve, and they do it with relentless enthusiasm. They don’t just accept things at face value; they poke, prod, and push until they get closer to an understanding.


“But why?”

“Why? Why? Why?”

“How’s come? BUT TELL ME HOW’S COME??”


You can hear their little voices in your head right now, can’t you? That insatiable need to understand, to challenge, to explore—that’s the mindset we so often lose as we grow up.


Why Do Adults Loathe Uncertainty?


As we get older, we’re taught—whether directly or indirectly—that certainty is the goal. That having the “right” answers, making the “right” choices, and following the “right” path will keep us safe, successful, and secure.


Uncertainty, on the other hand? It’s framed as something to be avoided. Something that signals risk, instability, or even failure.


So we trade in our curiosity for the comfort of absolutes. We avoid asking too many questions. We stop pushing boundaries. We opt for the known over the unknown, even when the unknown holds far greater potential.


But here’s the truth: certainty is an illusion.


Nothing is set in stone. No one can predict exactly what’s ahead. And those who cling to certainty often find themselves left behind when the world inevitably changes.


Why AI Demands an Embrace of Uncertainty


Now, more than ever, we need to reclaim our ability to sit with uncertainty. AI and emerging technologies are evolving at an unprecedented pace. The rules are being rewritten in real time, and rigid, absolute thinking simply doesn’t work in this landscape.


AI requires adaptability. It requires a questioning mindset. It requires curiosity over certainty.


The people who will thrive in this era aren’t the ones clinging to what they think they already know. They’re the ones asking:


“What else is possible?”

“What assumptions need to be challenged?”

“What can we learn from this?”


Curiosity Is the Key to Progress


At the end of the day, curiosity is what moves us forward. It’s what keeps us discovering. It’s what allows us to break free from limitations and uncover new possibilities.


So the next time uncertainty makes you uncomfortable, reframe it. Instead of fearing the unknown, lean into it. Get curious. Ask better questions. And trust that even if you don’t have all the answers, you’re still in control of how you explore them.


Because curiosity will always be more powerful than certainty.
